    LOWEPRO SPORT 200 AW II.

The simple genius of this pack’s design is noted when with feet on the ground, but not dismounted, you can slide it off your right arm and let it sling down under your left arm to unzip the side camera pocket for an easy grab and click.

    Lowepro sling

This is the best way, bar none other, to carry a DSLR camera on a bike tour. The built in padded camera pocket is large enough for a Rebel 5, or similar camera, with 18-55 mm lens and a 75-300 mm telephoto lens and has all sorts of little nooks and crannies for memory cards, battery charger and cords.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 2.21.58 PM

The main compartment is large enough to carry lunch, rain jacket and pants and other accessories. The front pouch expands for a helmet, or when on bike some Reefs for destination sightseeing or the cafe. There is a compartment and slot for a hydration bladder, although the pack does not come with one. The padded waste straps and sternum strap keep this super-lightweight pack secure while riding and there are two easy reach side zip pockets to fit an iPhone 6 with Google bike maps. The back padding is channeled for comfort and breathability. Lastly, there are cinch straps to hold a small tri-pod and tabs to clip a light to. The pack is very water resistant on its own, but also comes with a self-pouched waterproof, hi-viz rain cover.

Screen Shot 2016-06-01 at 2.21.20 PM

Note, this pack can also double as a travel pack, but it does not accommodate a laptop; I took it along with my commuter pack as a second personal item on the plane.

OneTen Cycles in Mendota Heights, Minnesota shares the same mantra as Terry Bicycles:

“Get more women riding bicycles, comfortably, safely and beautifully.”

There’s no argument that men have dominated the cycling industry for generations, but today there’s a strong emergence of women cyclists and it’s exciting how the marketplace is responding to address their needs. OneTen Cycles, an independently owned bike store, plans to make a big impact helping more women ride bicycles.

    cyn in shop

OneTen Cycles prides itself on being a woman-friendly bike store. This approach starts with a genuine greeting as you enter the shop, but there’s much more to making you feel comfortable. First, they have women working for them both behind the scenes and on the sales floor. OneTen is proud to employ two female sales associates and a female buyer/merchandiser. They all cycle and their experiences add credibility to their interactions with customers.

They also believe that not only should you feel welcome, but comfortable with the store layout and merchandise as well. A recent store remodel afforded them the opportunity to better address the needs of female customers. They added a comfortable, well-lit changing room and a professional, quiet bicycle fit station. Women now feel at ease trying on clothes and/or getting fit for the perfect size bike.

Terry clothing is proudly displayed in the designated women’s specific area. Because their female employees ride and wear the clothing, they can speak as experts. The store’s assortment ranges from recreational riders to performance cyclists. Terry clothing is a favorite because it offers both technical fabric and styling that is innovative and attractive. Furthermore, Terry offers sizing for real women’s bodies from size zero to plus sizes. Staff favorites include the Bella short and the infamous Bolero!

In addition to a woman friendly store and a vast women’s product assortment, OneTen Cycles also hosts women specific events such as No Drop Rides and Fix a Flat Seminars, as well as partnering with studios that offer spin classes. OneTen Cycles earnestly tries to help more women recognize the sheer joy of riding a bicycle.

Screen Shot 2016-05-25 at 9.31.26 AM

When I first started working at Terry 20+ years ago, I was delighted to find out that birthdays were a holiday. The mark of a cool company, for sure. But the frosting on the cake was the inspiration from above, where Georgena (Terry) would always devote her birthday to riding one mile for every one of her years. On Tuesday, May 31stth, join us in saying, “Happy one more mile, Georgena!”

As an owner of a cycling company that promotes “women in cycling” it was a natural to explore a variety women’s specific cycling brands. I was drawn to Terry right away because of Georgena Terry and her impact on women and cycling. I thought she was such an inspiration to women and cyclists in general.

When I meet with a potential Terry dealer the first thing I talk about is the Terry Saddle demo program and the wide variety of size options in clothing. No other brand offers so many sizing options for women than Terry. Saddles, sizing and their “ride it and love it” guarantee program make it an easy sell.

Pedal Pushers Diva Day clinics are geared towards female cycling enthusiasts looking to gain confidence and efficiency on the bike. Many of the women are intimated by the sport and come to us to meet other female cyclists and learn new skills. The first thing we tell the women is the importance of being comfortable on the bike. A proper bike-fit and saddle can make a huge difference. If they are experiencing discomfort they will not stick with the sport.

    springcamp

Many women want to know how I got into cycling. My father used to take me down to the Beaches in Toronto on weekends from the age of 10. A Dairy Queen ice cream was part of the incentive so I was hooked quickly. I took up mtb biking in my early twenties and started racing when I moved out West. I took up road biking in my early thirties as part of my mtn bike training. I love both sports equally and am passionate about showcasing them to as many women as possible.

  • HOW DO I FIND THE RIGHT BIKE SEAT FOR ME? – FINDING YOUR PURRFECT SADDLE.

HOW DO I FIND THE RIGHT BIKE SEAT FOR ME? – Three cats on a bicycle answer the question by helping you to find your purrfect saddle.

One of the most common questions we hear: how do I find the right bike seat for me?

Here’s a tip-filled article from Bicycling magazine that has a particular “Terry” point of view…

    Don’t Make These Saddle-Buying Mistakes

    Molly Hurford, Bicycling 2015
Choosing the best bicycle seat doesn’t have to be intimidating—or painful. Here’s how to get it right.

Finding a perfect bicycle saddle is like finding your life partner: It can be a long journey and you’ll probably have a few missteps along the way. Some people find the perfect saddle (or soulmate) right away; for others, the journey can take years. But while we can’t offer great dating advice, we can make the quest for the perfect saddle easier by looking at what you might be doing wrong in your hunt, and what you should be doing instead. To get the inside scoop, we talked to Paula Dyba, vice president of marketing at Terry Bicycles, who shared some of her best tips—and worst mistakes that she sees—when it comes to buying saddles.

Not Taking a New Saddle for a Test Ride
Using your hands—instead of your rear—to test the saddle is a common problem, Dyba explains. But you should always take it for a test ride, if possible. “Many bike shops allow you to test a saddle, or give you a return option if you’re not happy.”

    Equating Soft with Comfortable
Just because a saddle is well-cushioned, it may still be the wrong size or shape for you. Since our sitbones are always looking for a solid place to sit, cushiness can mean more pressure on your sensitive bits. “You want your weight to be supported by your sit bones, not by your soft tissue area,” says Dyba. “A soft saddle feels good for about 20 minutes, but then all that weight distribution on soft tissues can really start to hurt.”

    Assuming You Need XYZ Saddle
All cyclists have different body shapes—and that applies to butts, too. That’s why saddles come in different lengths, widths, and levels of firmness. “There are definite differences in sensitivity issues, rider style, and bike fit among riders,” says Dyba.

    Ignoring Pressure Points
There are many ways a saddle can work with your anatomy, explains Dyba, and it should provide relief in areas that come in contact with soft tissues. That may mean a cutout, or a thinner nose. Focus on whether the saddle pushes on sensitive soft tissue; if it does, you’ll want to try another style.

    Not Checking Sitbone Width
Sitbone width isn’t tied to pants size, so some companies have developed measurement tools, available in many bike shops now, to measure the distance between the sitbones to find the perfect saddle for you. “You definitely want a saddle that is wide enough to support your sitbones,” says Dyba. “That’s where the bulk of the weight and pressure on the saddle should be.”

    Not Explaining Your Ride Style
You might be tempted to walk into your local shop and start grabbing saddles to test. But before you do, think about what problems you’ve had and what kind of riding you’re doing. Mountain bike saddles make it easier to shift your weight way back, and road saddles are narrower to avoid chafing. If you have a lot of pressure problems and in-ride numbness, you may want to consider a saddle with a cutaway or a depression to take some pressure off, Dyba suggests. And if you’re planning on going on ultra-long endurance rides, looking for a saddle with a thin layer of gel on the top may make those miles feel less taxing.

Men and women also have different needs. “I suggest that women look for saddles that are flat along the top as opposed to curved upward from outer edge to edge, which can make you feel like your bones are being forced apart,” Dyba says.

    Rushing into a Decision
It may seem annoying to swap between saddles until you find “The One,” but saddle testing is worth the effort. “Don’t get discouraged,” Dyba says. “The right saddle will become the one you won’t even remember after the ride!”

A great answer to the question “How do I find the right bike seat for me?”

The Terry team hears the question, “How do I find the right bike seat for me?” a lot, so we did something about it! A great place to find the right saddle for you is our Saddle Selector, an online tool that gives a personalized recommendation based on how you ride. It’s quick and easy: answer a few questions and see exactly which Terry bike saddles are right for you.
