  • GETTING A HANDLE ON BAGS.

    Screen Shot 2016-04-22 at 2.31.09 PM 2

We’re all for having your essentials front and center on your bike, particularly when touring. The challenge is that putting a bag on your handlebar can be a wobbly affair, causing some serious steering issues if things aren’t balanced and tethered appropriately. The good news is that there are many solutions from extremely practical to the purse-onification of style.

    Handlebar Bags – Our Picks

Materials range from latest in technical waterproof cordura to classic cotton duck. The original bags from way back were French and had a clear sleeve on top for a map. The map pocket concept has survived as the need persists for on-bike navigation, but the sleeve now must allow for smartphone touch. Most bags are rectangular or squarish in shape, with top flap and outer pockets that allow for all manner of handiness.

One of the highest tech options comes from Thule and has a unique, aero design, click-in attachment and built-in reflective fabric (with a front mesh pouch that’s a handy place for a light/reflector.

For something a little less tour and a little more purse, we carry the Sunset Handlebar Bag from Timbuk2. One of the easiest to attach (via metallic leather straps), it’s big enough for a bottle of wine (!)  and makes a stylish alternative off bike.

Beautifully retro, made in the USA, Acorn makes a variety of bag options for bicycling. The Handlebar Bag is simple to attach (via leather straps) and made of a heavyweight waxed cotton canvas.

What to take on a tour? We get asked this question every day so we feel qualified to share our recommendations. Wicking, loose-fit jerseys with open pockets are a wonderful start, but the bottoms are really the critical item of clothing you want to be sure you’re outfitted properly with. We have a whole line of bottoms designed for touring. They are made of super fast drying T-Dry fabric and they’re outfitted with features specifically created for the needs of tourists: zip pocket (big enough for your iPhone) in case you don’t want to wear a jersey with pockets; higher density Flex Air Tour chamois (designed to give you a little extra padding but also is fully perforated for longer distance comfort); and a multitude of length and size choices (5″ shorter length; 8″ regular mid thigh; 10″ long that’s just above the knee; 17″ knicker just below the knee; full length tights in petite, regular and tall; plus sizes in short, knicker and tight).

  • REVOLUTION, 2016.

Screen Shot 2016-04-21 at 10.29.37 PM
Tuesday night was the kick off of our 3rd annual Wellness Revolution program in Burlington, VT; six weeks of informational and skill building sessions, packaged with fun and camaraderie, and a collective spirit to achieve wellness and well being.
Here are some reasons our newest revolutionaries came together:
“I lost 150 lbs last year and I want become more active to keep if off.”
“I am afraid to “clip in” but want to learn how.”
“I always feel top heavy and like I am going to fall over on the road.”
“I want to learn how to shift all those gears so I can ride up a hill.”
“I want to learn how to change a tire so I feel I can go out alone.”
“I ride a lot, but want to find others to ride with.”
“I need to figure out what to wear on my bike”
“I’ve never ridden a road bike and my goal is to compete in a triathlon.”
“I broke my ankle so I can’t run any more but I think I can ride a bike.”
“I just walked into this place for a cup of coffee, and thought it would be cool to join this group and learn to ride”

  • (TI)ME FOR A CHANGE.

    Nome

Let me know if you do not agree, but I am finding more and more that “New Bike Day” is the best day of the year. Last year, when I traded in my aluminum road bike in for a carbon frame, women’s specific bike lovingly named Princess Lady Lovely Locks, I thought to myself – this is it, this is the only road bike I will ever need.

Famous last words, right? This season after panicking over countless potholes and some frame sizing issues, I decided rather than trading sideways to another bike-in-a-box, that this would be the year to invest in a titanium frame. An article by Bicycling Magazine described precisely why I chose titanium over carbon this time around:

[Tom Kellogg] points to ti’s nonlinear modulus as the source of the metal’s unique ride: That characteristic means the more force you apply, the harder it becomes to bend. “If you try to bend a piece it will at first give a little,” says Kellogg. “But the further you try to flex it, the more resistant it becomes.” On the road, that trait means you know exactly what’s going on at the intersection of your tire and the pavement—a sensation demanded by performance-oriented riders—but the initial flex means you’re not bothered by rough pavement. Bikes made from steel, aluminum, and carbon can also achieve that result, it’s just that titanium does so with a blend of ride sensations nothing else quite matches…”

I decided to hand pick each component with my body and riding style in mind to really make it roll. This process led me through several stages that looked something like this:

    1) How hard can this be? I can totally do this, I know what goes into making a bike!
    2) Wait…what is that? and does this go with that? How are there so many choices for that?!
    3) This is impossible.
    4) I am a genius.

After a lot of research, phone calls to my bike shop, article reading and part searching, I finally had a box together with everything I needed to officially start the build. 30 minutes into a youtube video describing how to build your own bike, I decided to hand it off to the professionals for fear of crushing the beautiful headset I had just spent over a week choosing. One wheelset debacle and a cracked bottom bracket later – I have one sweet ride and I have never been more comfortable.

It may be the curse of our sport, that as long as you are riding, you will find a reason to upgrade, modify and trade up. But this time, I firmly believe – this is the only road bike I will ever need.

  • CYCLE MONTEREY.

    DSCN0901

Our CEO, Liz Robert, reports on last week’s annual Bicycle Leadership Conference in Monterey, where all the industry movers and shakers gather to address the challenges and opportunities of cycling.

This year we talked about what the industry can do to encourage more women into cycling. It’s the only segment of the market that’s growing!

    • Improve safety of roads.
    • Train shops to be inviting and accessible, and less elite white male oriented (yes the guys talked about this hard truth).
    • Emphasize greater overall well being from being outside vs spinning in the studio.

Speaking of getting outside, we also rode bikes from Monterey to Carmel along the Monterey Bike Path and 17 Mile Drive, the incredibly scenic, mostly flat and surprisingly quiet road meandering along the coastline.
