After deciding that I wanted to commit to winter bike commuting in Vermont, I knew that I was going to get a fat bike. The first decision was, of course, what fat bike to choose now that many major bike companies are manufacturing them. This past summer when I purchased my first road bike I read as many reviews as possible before I decided which bike would be the best match for my needs. I read about responsiveness, what components may need to be replaced, the weight, how well it climbs – this is where it got tricky with the Fat bike decision. For every Fat bike I looked at, there was only one review, “OH MAN THIS IS SO FUN,” and while reading this I thought, “great, it’s fun, but what else?”
I ended up purchasing a 9-speed Surly Pugsley, knowing that I would be going off the beaten path on this baby. I decided to get a frame that could be repaired if it got damaged and with a bike that is inherently heavy, weight was not a major factor in my decision. I was nervous about learning how to shift on a bike that was so different than my road bike, and I was also worried that it would be too heavy to get going anywhere. The moment that I hopped on the new bike (named Wednesday), I understood the reviews and all I can say is, OH MAN THIS IS FUN!

Is your “but” getting in the way of your ride? You can come up with a million excuses as to why you “shouldn’t” be taking the time to get on your bike for a few miles each day….work and family responsibilities are easy targets. You truly feel them as real things you can’t take time away from. I get it.
Here is the issue for me as your “Derailleur”…having your “buts” get in the way can lead to you saying things like, “But I’ll never become a professional so why try…” or my favorite “But if I can’t ride 25+ miles today, it just isn’t worth it”. Here is where I am pulling you up by your emergency brake and saying “ENOUGH”! YOUR “BUTS” are getting in the way of not only your ride, but your life. And it’s time to give up the ‘but’s’. Seriously.
I was once told that a “but” cancels out everything that precedes it. Hence why I’ve since adopted a “No Buts” policy. I now believe where there’s a will there’s a way. You see, a “but” is essentially an excuse as to why you can’t have something. To live a life of excuses isn’t very empowering. In fact, it’ll stop you from getting the results that you want.
So why do people fill their sentences, and thus lives, with buts? Because at a deeper level they’ve been programmed to believe that life isn’t a field of strawberries, that some people can’t have what they want, that life has to be difficult. If this is you, stop! Life is exactly as we believe it to be. Our beliefs are what create our reality. Believe in something enough, really truly believe something, and it will happen.
This week I encourage you to notice every time you say “but”. And then really question whether there is any truth to the but (which generally there won’t be – it’ll just be a figment of your imagination) and start to explore alternatives such as: What if I could do this? What if I gave that a go? Give up your buts and just notice how your life starts to transform into a world of opportunities and happy endings.
Now get out there and ride…

Brooklyn Fit Chick here and the East Coast weather is finally starting behave which means I can start going on my all-day rides once again. (Huzzah!) My personal favorite day trip runs from Prospect Park to For Tilden Beach and requires generous amounts of sun block and an iPod full of motivating tunes.
Being a Terry Fitness Ambassador has some pretty sweet perks such as getting to try out their new gear and let you all know what I think. So today I wanted to let you all know about my favorite gear sold by Terry and where you can find it on their site—you’re welcome!
This is hands down the most comfortable saddle I have ever ridden in my life and can NOT wait to get this on the road for my first century ride of the season. Women ride the seat differently than men and Terry Saddles are created with the comfort of females in mind. If you plan on going on out for 3+ hours at a time on average—this is the best gear to invest in.
As I previously stated—the weather on the East Coast has been very up and down. Yesterday for example (as I type this) it was 86 degrees and humid while today it is in the mid-60s and cloudy. (This makes my sinuses very unhappy, by the way.) Each day I leave my home to go for a ride I am not sure how the day will turn out but this Gore Bike Wear windbreaker is very dependable. It repels water and wind and feels so light that it won’t weigh you down. Also, it’s light enough to throw into a backpack if it starts to get too hot. Perfect for early morning/evening jaunts when the temperature is unpredictable.
Bike shorts are essential for day-long rides but not terribly cute under a maxi dress or a pair of capri pants. When I want the padding but still be dressed in casual street wear, I slip one of these liners underneath. They fit like a bike short and will keep you comfortable all day without making you look like a racer. Perfect for any cyclist who likes to look cute on her bike. (Nothing wrong with wanting to be cute!)
Helmets are a must whether you are racing through the city or just taking a spin around your neighborhood (please tell me you always wear one!) I love this particular style because it is light, vented and doesn’t clamp my head in-therefore protecting my hair from turning into a sweaty, moppy mess which is very important to me. (I spend a lot of time on my hair!)
I am saving up to get this tank next because it is so adorable and I know I can wear it with jeans, shorts or a skirt. Who says you can’t be fashionable while on the road? Not me! Terry offers several tank styles each summer and I have been happy with everyone I have ever bought.
That’s all for me this month. Next time I will talk about riding in super-high temps & humidity. In the meantime—be sure to enjoy your rides!

Basketball has its March Madness, Baseball its spring training, but for cyclists, we own a complete month – May. Sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, the designation of May as National Bike Month began in 1956 to showcase the many benefits of bicycling.
“Whether you bike to work or school; ride to save money or time; pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment; or simply to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the unique power of the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.”
At Terry, we’ll be celebrating the month by committing to ride to work and encouraging friends and family to do the same. This year, we’ll also have weekly promotional events that you won’t want to miss so keep an eye out for our emails throughout the month.

Michaux is a British company, named for one of the first organizations that allowed women to cycle in public in the late 1800’s — the Michaux Cycle Club. Regarded as “courageous figureheads of a new era of freedom, not just for women, but for society as a whole,” this club shepherded in a new era of female mobility.

After tiring of looking for a suitable cycling handbag, Rachel Bonney decided to design her own. Her aim was to offer the same sense of empowerment and freedom so embodied by the early cycle clubs, but with a modern, active approach to living an independent life by bike. She manages to balance elegance, style, heritage and functionality – and manufacturers exclusively in the UK.

Cheers to Rachel, and here’s hoping we can become a distributor in the next few months!
Would you buy one? Let us know! In the meantime, check out more cool bike bags here.
