  • A VERY TERRY COLLECTION.

Long time Terry customer, Jodi Smee, shares some great tips on beating the heat, and reveals a veritable museum of Terry cycling tops.

We were delighted when Jodi reached out recently to let us know about her extensive collection of Terry bike clothing. Even better, she’s a very interesting lady with great stories to tell. She kindly agreed to share our conversation, so you can meet her too…

Jodi – It’s 112° here in the “lovely” (NOT!) Phoenix, Arizona area, so since I can’t go outside for too long (don’t worry, I rode my bicycle at 5 a.m. when it was only 90°), I was looking in my closet and realized that the part of it that has my Terry clothing is like a trip through time. So, I pulled it all out, laid it on various pieces of furniture, and took photos because I thought you might enjoy seeing all the things that I have loved, worn, and appreciated over the years.

Most of it is still worn on occasion, but the newer things are the ones I wear regularly. Missing is my favorite pair of tights, my Echelon tights, that I wore on the ride this morning, and the only thing I will ever wear in this extreme heat. They are wonderful!! I wore my QOM jersey from last year with them, and that is also missing from these images. They are drying after being washed immediately. I am sure there are a few other items missing as well, but these are most of what I have.

Thanks for the info about the technical aspects of producing the garments. I sew garments for myself and it is far more complicated than a lot of people realize. The fact that you are taking a two dimensional object (fabric) and turning it into a three dimensional one (finished garment) is sometimes complicated enough, but trying to mass produce it and have all the prints match up at the seams “seems” almost impossible! I try to stick to solids! 🙂 But I am only sewing for myself, and my most complicated garments are Renaissance dresses to wear to the local Renaissance Festival once a year. Working with stretchy knits also can be challenging. [See more on how Terry gear is designed here.]

Terry Bikes – You mentioned your favorite Echelon tights for riding in the heat. Do you have a favorite top for the heat?

The Soleil tops are favorites, and also the Sunblockers. I have three Sunblocker tops that have to be 10-15 years old. I don’t wear them as much, but I have been a fan of them for a long time.

I also ride motorcycles and I sometimes wear my Terry jerseys under my motorcycle gear. I do ride all year.

T.B. – How about the cold – does it ever get wintry where you ride? What are your favorite pieces then?

It hardly ever gets cold enough to worry about here, but when it does, I just put on more layers. One of those layers is a lovely SmartWool jersey I got a few years ago. I also take that jersey with me on motorcycle trips because when we ride high mountain passes, it gets very cold! Layers are the key to comfortable riding on both bicycles and motorcycles.

T.B. – When did you discover Terry, and what led you to try our clothing? What kinds of things do you look for when choosing new pieces?

I started riding bicycles on long distance rides in 1995. I have been buying Terry products since the late 90s when I started competing in mountain bike races. I raced for five years, from 1997 to 2002. I think I started buying Terry products because I saw them either at a store or online, thought they were nice designs, and I have continued to buy Terry products because of the quality, how well they work on the bicycle, and the variety.

T.B. – What are your all time favorite prints? And jersey models (I’m guessing Soleil, but…?)

The “blue peacock” print a few years ago on the Strada top is my favorite print. I waited too long to buy it and had to get a large instead of a medium, but I modified it so I could wear it anyway. I have learned to not “wait for it to go on sale” to buy products that I like because chances are that other people like the garments just as well as I do and then they sell out.

The Soleil jerseys are great for me, and the Sunblockers before that. In this climate, I would never buy a Sun Goddess jersey, even though they are pretty, because I want the sun OFF my body! It’s different where people have a long winter to suffer through and then they want sun! I hate it, personally, and want to move to a place where there are four seasons and it’s cloudy most of the time.

T.B. – What type of riding do you like to do and where?

I used to do longer, organized road rides, and I also raced mountain bikes. But now I mostly ride for fitness (and fun, of course). My most recent “challenge” was a ride in the White Mountains of Arizona. I started at around 8,000 feet in elevation, and the road undulated, losing and gaining the “same” 500 feet for 20 miles. Then the last couple of miles the road gained the 1,000 feet to the destination. Then I had to do the same thing on the way back, but it was somewhat downhill. I hadn’t really trained a lot for it, and I was riding an old Cannondale that never fit me properly (I’m only 5’2” and petite, so it’s difficult to find anything to fit me). But I did it, and I didn’t stop. I ate a Clif bar at the turn-around point, but that’s it. I have since gotten a new bike that fits me, a Specialized Amira, but I still can’t believe I actually did that. The people in the small town at the beginning of the ride were shaking their heads as I left, and were amazed when I came back on my bike and not in an ambulance. LOL. I wasn’t fast, but I made it. I would like to try it again on my Amira and then compare the two experiences.

Any other favorite tips for riding in the heat?

Riding in the heat can be dangerous. In the summer, I have to be out riding by 5 or 6 a.m. at the latest, and back by 8 or 9  a.m. at the latest. Otherwise, it is impossible to stay hydrated. I also wear the long Echelon tights, which are the best thing ever, and long sleeve light jerseys, like the Soleil. I do not want the sun on my skin. I feel like my skin is on fire if it is uncovered. If I wear short sleeves, I wear “sun sleeves,” most of which I made myself (because I had to have sparkles on them!). The days that are the worst are the ones that exceed 110°F.  Around 112, it becomes unbearable to be outside at all, much less try to do anything physical. If I miss my riding window, I have to go to the gym.

  • CHASING EDDY.

One of the coolest things about my job the last 20+ years has been the ability to meet cyclists of all kinds. Far and away, my best cycling celebrity encounter was with 5 time Tour de France victor, Eddy Merckx and his son, Axel, at a trade show years ago. A class act and a big inspiration to us in the development of our jersey prints this summer.

There will be plenty of tributes to Mr. Merckx on the 50th anniversary of his 1st Tour de France win. Not only does the Tour begin in his hometown of Brussels on the 50th anniversary of his first Tour victory, but it’s also the 100th anniversary of the yellow jersey which he has worn more times than anyone else. We felt it important to give a nod to these milestones with this summer’s TDF Collection…

  • BEST INDOOR CYCLING SHORTS – A SPIN INSTRUCTOR’S PICK.

Terry Ambassador Karyn Lewis leading spin class in her favorite Terry Chill 7 bike shorts

Teacher’s Favorite – A Spin Instructor’s Pick for Best Indoor Cycling Shorts

    By Karyn Lewis

It’s early March, and here in Vermont, the local Spinning classes are maxed out.  Our streets are loaded with ice and people are afraid of the conditions out there, so spinning is the perfect safe alternative.

Photo of model on location wearing Terry Chill 9 Bike short
Terry Chill 9 Short and Soleil Long Sleeve Top in Crystalline/Lime

I have taught two classes a week for over 20 years at the same club.   It’s always nice to see all my regulars but also great to meet new participants. Once a month I lead an intro class for beginners.  I love to get new people excited and involved in indoor cycling.

My new people always complain about the pain they feel when they ride.  My answer to them is invest in a quality bike short.  It’ll ease the pain & assure that you continue to ride a couple times a week.

I always hand out our Terry catalog and they eagerly accept it.  Their first question is which short are you wearing?  I’ve had many terry favorites. The Soleil was my go-to spin short for a couple of years. Then along came the Chill.  Now I ride the Chill 7 indoors and out.  I’m extremely happy that for 2019 we have three different length options.

I tend to instruct both on and off the bike.  That way I can quietly inform someone of an adjustment or correction.  The biggest reason I love the Chill is it stays put.  No adjustments needed even if I get off the bike 10 times in an hour.

Terry offers a short for every body, every size, every age.  Long, short, capri, loose fitting, skirts.  I love when my intro people attend my regular class for the first time with their new shorts to model.  They are so impressed with how they perform and keep the hurt away.

We will be spinning until June, when I take the summer off to ride outdoors.  Whichever your choice, indoor or outdoor, keep on riding!

  • PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT: PSYCHLO WOMEN’S CYCLING TIGHT.

Terry’s New Psychlo Women’s Cycling Tight takes on Vermont Fall colors

With Fall foliage sneaking in on us here at Terry Headquarters, we’re enjoying another dash of color beside the vivid kaleidoscope of colors here in Vermont. Welcome, the new Terry Psychlo Women’s Cycling Tight.

Ready to add a pop of color to your drawer full of black lycra? Just in time to merge with the colors of Autumn, the Psychlo tight has arrived. With a burst of color on the lower legs, this tight is sure to stand out against brilliant fall foliage.

More important, recent research shows that the most effective place for bright and reflective fabrics for cyclists is on the lower legs and feet. The pattern of motion on moving parts of the body grabs motorists’ attention far more effectively than static or bike mounted brights or reflectors.

Along with a splash of color on the legs, the tight also features our distance Flex Chamois; which keeps cyclists comfortable even while perched on a 3 inch wide platform for rides lasting over 2 hours.

The lightweight, non-fleece-lined material is a good defense against the chill of a late Fall morning, yet the fabric doesn’t overheat a rider as the sun burnishes the hillsides and adds some warmth to the day.

One of the most important benefits with this new tight is its increased visibility. The colorful mosaics created with each pedal stroke serve to capture the eye of drivers and tourists otherwise distracted by Vermont’s foliage, brewery’s, vineyards, and apple orchards.

  • TERRY BIKE GEAR GOES MULTI-SPORT.

Terry Bike Gear can be surprisingly suited to life beyond cycling

Favorite Terry Bike Gear - Soleil Sleeveless Jersey
Soleil Top – perfect for beach walking. Photo: Phil Erb

Many of us enjoy exercise beyond the bike, and whether we’re going from yoga to the gym, running races or running errands, our Terry bike gear goes with us.

It turns out that clothing designed to be comfortable, functional and flattering for cycling can be all those things for other activities too. Versatility is built in.

It makes sense – fabric that feels good, wicks well, and keeps the sun off when you’re on a bike, performs just the same anywhere else.

Versatile Terry Bike Gear - Soleil Long Sleeve Jersey

I absolutely love the versatility of the Soleil Long Sleeve Top. It’s the most versatile piece of clothing in my closet. I bring it everywhere and wear it for every occasion.

Whether we’re heading to the beach, mountain, poolside, or work, it’s one of my go-to tops. Its UPF 50+ fabric and long sleeves offer the right amount of sun protection for our daily beach walks along the Maine coast. Heading out for a hike, the fabric is super light weight, breathable and wicks away moisture keeping me dry and ready for my next adventure.

All seasons in Vermont are unpredictable, we can always count on vast changes in the weather within a 24 hour period. I often wear the Soleil as a base-layer to add extra warmth.

I’ve added one or two Soleil Long Sleeve Tops to my wardrobe each year ever since they were introduced. The colors are dynamic and the prints are fun, making them easy to pair with a casual hoodie or outerwear.

One last thing, the pockets are perfectly sized to fit your phone, dog leash, or wallet.

At Terry, we are all proud of our Soleil program. The versatility of the tops provide life for them beyond cycling. They transport me from bike to garden with ease – the handy back pockets provide storage for cell phone, gloves and handfuls of green beans. But what I like most about the Soleil Top (the UPF 50+ is a given!) is how it manages to keep me cool when heat and humidity strike so I don’t end up looking like a hot mess fright!

  • STAFF PICKS: TERRY TECH TEE

Tech Tee: Versatile, Multi-Sport, All Round Feel-Good Top

Of all my Terry gear, the Tech Tee is my favorite.

Karyn works out in Terry Tech Tank - favorite Tech Tee versionI wear the sleeveless Tech Tank almost daily, and I love it for my functional training workouts. I never have to adjust once it’s on. I love the rear coverage as it’s cut longer in the back, which works great for dead rows, push-ups, stretching etc.

It handles sweat super well, washes easily, doesn’t retain odor even after many uses. Even left in my gym bag, wet all day, I’ve never had odor or washing problems. The material of the Tech Tees is super versatile. Wet, dry, wrinkle free, it’s just comfortable.

I train mostly to stay fit and participate in all the outdoor activities that Vermont offers: walking, hiking, cycling, skiing, swimming.

I also find myself reaching for this shirt when I teach spin. My students just love the buddies design!

I own most every color that has come out in the past three years. On the road I like bright green, bright red. As for my workouts I try to rotate, so my peeps don’t see me in the same color three times a week.

Terry Tech Tee variation - the Tech Tank in hibiscus/buddies
    [clearfix]

I am a 5’9″ girl who is stuck between a medium and a large. I choose fitted styles in Terry cycling shirts and I do find they run small, so I always size up – Soleil and Bella for example – and I also wear the Tech Tee in large as it’s more fitted. The Tech Tank is a loose fit so I find that a medium works best.

I wear leggings or shorts to workout, and for teaching spin I always choose the Terry Soleil short. On the road, well, now that I’ve been at Terry for 3 years, I have some great choices. Right now I’m loving the Chill 7 and Hi Rise Holster shorts!

One more thing about the Tech Tank, I find cycling in Vermont that there are days when I actually want to catch more sun. I grab this top for that, and also for the bright colors and visibility on the road.

  • HOW TO CHOOSE BIKE BOTTOMS.

Everything you wanted to know about choosing Bike Bottoms

What to look for when comparing bike bottoms

Your choice of bike bottoms can make or break your enjoyment of cycling. It’s almost as important as selecting the right bike seat.

But it’s hard to know where to begin figuring out how to choose bike bottoms when there are so many from so many brands – and they all look pretty much the same!

These days there are more and more fun colors and patterns in bike bottoms, which can make the choice seem a little easier, but beware! It’s easy to choose for fashion and end up with bike bottoms that don’t work well for the riding you do.

    We’re here to help.

The team of product designers and developers here at Terry spilled the beans, with expert advice on how to choose bike bottoms. Now we bring you:

Your first choice is easy – shorts, knickers or tights? That’s going to depend mostly on the weather you expect, of course.

Next, dive into these posts to explore all your options:

How to choose your new favorite bike shorts

The choice starts with the type of riding you expect to do, and some personal preferences. From there, we explain everything you need to know about how bike shorts are constructed, what fabrics are used, and what chamois options you have, to find the shorts best suited to how you ride: How to choose your new favorite bike shorts

How to choose just the right bike tights

Fabric, fit, construction and chamois are all essential parts of choosing the right bike tights. This post guides you through your options: What to look for when shopping for bike tights

Also, check out this real-ride field test of our cycling tights, with recommendations for choosing the best tights for the riding conditions you expect.

How to choose your ideal cycling knickers

  • HOW TO CHOOSE CYCLING TOPS.

How to choose your “go-to” cycling tops

There’s so much more to choosing cycling tops – or bike jerseys – than just finding patterns and colors you like. Finding the right tops for your riding style, comfort preferences and performance needs will make all your rides more fun and enjoyable.

We’re here to help you navigate all the choices. Here’s the low-down from the team of experts here at Terry:

Sleeves – for all seasons and reasons

Striking the right balance between warmth, ventilation, and sun protection is your first consideration. It’s the biggest reason why most cyclists collect a variety of cycling tops – to make sure they have just the right jersey for any weather conditions they expect to ride in.

The other big reason is all those terrific patterns and colors – so you always have great answers to “What do I feel like wearing today?”

Don’t forget about the cycling bolero – a very useful addition to your cycling wardrobe. Wear over short sleeve and sleeveless cycling tops for extra protection against sun or cold air, then stow it easily when conditions change.

    Is it your style?

Are you a road rider who goes out for hours at a time? A globetrotting, multi-day bike tourist? An MTB maven or gravel gal? Or maybe you’re more of a recreational rider? Would you like to be able to use your top for a variety of activities?  Selecting the right jersey should be a function of the style of riding you’re going to be doing, the kind of weather you’ll be likely to encounter, the amount of coverage you want—or don’t want—and of course, what you want to spend. Before selecting your top, always consider how you’ll be spending your time in the saddle.

We’re well aware that there isn’t just one type of rider out there, so we offer something in every category: short sleeve, sleeveless, long sleeve styles in high functioning fabrics from ultralight  to thermal fleece-backed.

Another biggie for cycling has to do with pockets, both in numbers and in placement. Handy as can be for extended rides and on-the-fly support, open rear pockets can carry your phone, energy bars, light wind jacket, sunscreen, an extra water bottle, and a host of necessities that would otherwise require a pack. Look for pockets that are easy to reach, plenty deep and with some security for key or credit card.

You can filter any of our cycling apparel categories using the checkboxes for 1 or 2 pockets, or 3+ pockets, like this: all apparel with pockets. If you prefer to live a pocket free lifestyle, don’t worry, we have options for you, too!

    Fit.

Our goal is to get you riding beautifully, and that includes riding in comfort. The fit of our cycling tops gives you options, in addition to size, to find the balance of tightness, airiness, and aerodynamics that suits your preferences and individual shape. Here’s a brief guide to our fit options.

The jerseys and cycling tops you’ll find at Terry fall into three general fit categories:

    Athletic Fit

Form-fitted for best moisture wicking and aerodynamics to minimize wind resistance and flapping. Typically these are considered “performance” tops and are well-suited for intensive riding. See athletic fit options here.

    Semi-Fitted

Body contoured, but not tight, this fit splits the difference between athletic and relaxed fit tops. Suited for touring and fitness/recreational riding where aerodynamics are less important than all-day, on/off bike comfort. Browse semi-fitted cycling top options here.

    Relaxed Fit

Loose against the body. Unusual to find in the cycling industry, we offer several tops in this fit category for riders who simply don’t want to wear anything tight but desire the features of a technical top. Shop relaxed fit tops here.

    Fabric & Technology.

So which fabrics are best for cycling tops? The world has exploded with technical man-made fabric options, all-natural performance alternatives, sustainable fibers like bamboo or recycled polyester, and a host of yarns, treatments and finishes that can add certain characteristics. All of these have something to offer, but they can and do differ in their levels of moisture control, heat management, UPF factor, texture, anti-odor control and stretch/resilience. With so many options in the world of cycling wear, it’s important to select tops in fabrics that will serve the best technical properties for your needs. Here are a few excellent fabrics that we use in our tops, and why use them.

    Antibacterial Fabric:

Amazing silver ion technology embedded in our 100% polyester anti-bacterial fabric permanently inhibits the growth of odor causing bacteria. Less bacteria = less odor. So how does it work? The positive silver ions are attracted to bacteria’s negatively charged ions and when they get together, the bacteria stops reproducing completely. Unlike some antibacterial finishes, this technology will never wash away or stop working because it is woven into the very fabric. The magic doesn’t just stop at the bacteria-eating buffet, this fabric is also highly breathable, quick wicking, and has interwoven UV protection (UPF 40+ rating). The array of jerseys that utilize this innovative fabric includes our Breakaway Mesh Jersey, Sunblocker Jersey, Actif Jersey and Sun Goddess Jersey.

    Soleil Fabric (Micropoly)

Apparel made from our revolutionary Soleil fabric provides cyclists with sun protection against UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays. In addition to offering built in UPF 50+ sun protection that won’t wash away with continued use, our micropoly Soleil fabric has a luxuriously silky feel, is extremely light, wrinkle resistant, antimicrobial, moisture wicking and comfortably wearable in high heat/aerobic conditions. The combination of these properties make our Soleil Tops an excellent option for recreating beyond just riding and are used for a host of activities from paddle boarding to pickleball. Tech Tee Fabric:

Ideal for occasions where you just don’t need/want a traditional bike jersey, our Tech Tee fabric has a more casual feel yet is still packed with performance features. It delivers UPF 50+ sun protection, great stretch, and exceptional moisture wicking to keep you cool, dry and comfortable on recreational and commuter rides. Explore our line of Tech Tees and Tanks. Polyester Tricot:

Polyester Tricot isn’t that well known, but its soft, natural-fiber feel, smooth texture, and day-in-day-out durability make it a phenomenal choice for cycling. Woven using a unique process, tricot is resistant to runs, tears, wrinkles, and static and offers wonderful drapeability that flatters all body types. Its highly breathable, polyester-based construction excels at moisture wicking and provides cling-free comfort for many happy hours in the saddle. Our best selling Tourista Tanks and crowd-pleasing Wayfarer Tops made from this fabric can be found riding anywhere from casual excursions with friends to multi-day bike tours.

    Recycled Polyester:

In building upon our mountain bike and gravel riding programs, it was important to select a fabric that could stand up to the demands of high-intensity, enduro experiences. We opted to use an eco-friendly recycled polyester mesh that manages moisture and has superior durability and abrasion and UV resistance. With a UPF 30+ rating, our recycled polyester Vista Tops pair perfectly with sunny days spent out on the trails.

    Italian Rib-Tek:

We sourced this stunning mesh fabric to create a performance player with the best breathability, that dries quickly, drapes beautifully, and has a very soft and cool feel against the skin. Primed for the hottest conditions and most vigorous workouts, our Cyclotanks made from Italian Rib-tek are a preferred option amongst cyclistas and yogis alike.

    Merino Wool:

Where wool is considered one of nature’s miracle fabrics, merino is the crème de la crème for cycling. Finest and softest wool of any sheep, Merino makes a great next-to-skin natural fabric alternative for cyclists. It excels at regulating body temperature, providing a high degree of warmth to weight so you don’t have to bulk up. It is also excellent for moisture wicking, is slightly moisture repellent, has antibacterial properties and can be aired out rather than washed with each use.
