  • TERRY’S BIKE MONTH BOOK CLUB.

Next to riding, one of the best things in the world is curling up with a good book. Even better if that book whisks you off on a cycling adventure or helps relieve stress from your daily life. We’ve selected a handful of books, written by riders, that we recommend adding to your reading list this summer. Join us in the Terry Bike Month Book Club, check out these titles and let us know what you think and what’s on your bookshelf in the comments…

My two favourite things in life are libraries and bicycles. They both move people forward without wasting anything. The perfect day: riding a bike to the library.

HEIDI ACROSS AMERICA: One Woman’s Journey on a Bicycle through the Heartland

In the summer of 2010, author and slow travel enthusiast Heidi Beierle had just finished her first year of graduate studies in Community and Regional Planning and embarked on a solo bike tour and research trip from her home in Eugene, Oregon to the Preserving the Historic Road Conference in Washington, D.C. What started as a research trip studying bicycle tourism and rural economic development, evolved into an intimately physical and psychological encounter with self and nationhood.

At the time of her journey across America, Heidi was 35 and admittedly didn’t love much about herself except her ability to endure grueling physical undertakings. She viewed this expedition as an opportunity to fix her failures and insufficiencies while highlighting her strengths. There were also some pressing research questions she wanted to explore: Why do people live in small towns and what do they like about it? Did a cyclist like herself bring economic benefit to the small towns she visited? What could communities do to support or invite cyclists to stay in their towns? What could cyclists do to support the communities?

From the Pacific to the Atlantic, she was surprised by the kindness of strangers and the emotional toil of her journey. This trip led her to travel through Wyoming, where she grew up and where the wind, dryness and desolate landscape made a lasting imprint on her. It took her through the Plains and into the Ozarks where the heat climbed to agonizing temperatures and every mile felt one closer to defeat. She faces these tribulations head on and reflects on how her upbringing taught her self-reliance, the beautiful dimensions of solitude and how to push through the pain, one pedal stroke at a time. Throughout her travels, Heidi discovers a newfound compassion for herself and a growing love for her country.

And throughout her journey and observance of others, her questions began to morph and mirror things many Americans are asking themselves today: How can I be okay in my own skin? What does it mean to be enough? How do I satisfy my desire to travel without harming the planet? What does it mean to love America?

For many young people, it is a rite of passage to set out on an adventure to see the world and expose themselves to new experiences, however, we often think of these experiences as occurring overseas and in far off lands. Heidi Across America presents a journey to self-love, played across America that exposes the reader to the diversity, awe, and wonder, that’s available right here in our nation. In this book, Heidi transverses many landscapes and heavy-hitting topics, allowing us to sit sidesaddle as she meets new friends, encounters old demons, and finds herself on the bike and her connection to the heartland.

Heidi Beierle’s memoir, Heidi Across America, is what we all need to read in our current climate of cultural and political division. Beierle brings her open-hearted curiosity to every roadway, every diner, and every person (or animal) she encounters, offering the reader a glimpse into what it really means to be a true citizen of a homeland as vast and diverse as the United States. On a bicycle and depending upon the kindness of strangers, this author takes us on a journey that is more than a grueling ride through the heartland. It is a guide for all of us to slow down and really look at what is right in front of us. If you need a shot of optimism and hope, Heidi Across America will put it right into your veins.

Cami Ostman founder of The Narrative Project and author of Second Wind

This intrepid, honest, compelling, introspective travel memoir is beautifully descriptive of the rural parts of the United States as it ranges from the mountains to the plains to the cities. Cyclists, armchair travelers, and women exploring new directions in life will be drawn to this book.

    The Breakaway

Despite being 400 pages, The Breakaway from #1 New York Time best selling author Jennifer Weiner is a page-turner that can be engulfed in one weekend, and ideally from a hammock, camp, beach or lounge chair. This warmhearted, empowering novel is much more than a romance, with themes of friendship, body positivity, the complexities of mother/daughter relationships, secrets and the power of choice, all on the backdrop of a life-changing bike tour.

Our protagonist, Abby Stern, wants to believe she’s made it to her happy place, yet can’t escape the feeling that something isn’t right. She’s got good friends, her trusty bike, a cycling club in Philadelphia, and is on track to marry her childhood sweetheart, Mark. She’s in her thirties and finally at peace with her plus-size body—at least, most of the time—has an apartment in one of the greatest cities in the world and while she may not have a “career” is finding her stride working gig jobs. So why does something feel off? Well, for starters she can’t stop thinking about the thrilling night of passion she had with a man named Sebastian two years prior….

When Abby receives a last-minute invitation to lead a 700-mile bike tour from NYC to Niagara Falls, she views it as the perfect opportunity to take some space from Mark, have a chance to reflect and make up her mind on her happily ever after. But things get complicated fast. First, Abby spots a familiar face in the group—it’s no other than Sebastian, the sexy stranger and one-night stand she thought she’d never see again. In spite of their undeniable chemistry and previous connection, Abby is determined to keep her distance. The next unwelcomed twist? Abby’s diet-and-weight obsessed mother, who she blames for a lifetime of body shaming and insecurities that she’s still trying to overcome, joins the tour as a surprise addition. The Breakaway is told through several POV chapters with the most POV narration stemming from Abby and Sebastian. However, this way of storytelling provides a glimpse into the lives of many of the cyclists on tour, creating a dynamic and relatable cast of characters.

Over the two week tour, strangers become friends, hidden truths come to light, a teenage girl with a secret unites the riders in unexpected ways…and Abby is forced to reconsider everything she believes about herself, her mother, and the nature of love.

The Breakaway is delightfully suspenseful, sexy and just so much fun. Our romantic hero, Abby, is refreshingly poised, confident and human, acknowledging her flaws while not sizing herself down—literally and figuratively—to fit into any societal standards. This rom com is both breezy and thoughtful, with Weiner touching on some serious issues while maintaining a light-hearted tone that allows you to sit back and enjoy the ride.

A journey that’s as much about self-discovery as it is about exploring new territory on wheels.

    – The New York Times

Incredibly fun…A lovely, compulsively readable story about finding your path and believing in your own worth.

  • A BOATLOAD OF FUN IN GREECE.

    Contributed by Lisa W.

October in Greece offers a perfect setting for a 10-day cycling adventure.  With sunny and dry temperatures in the 70s, lighter crowds and the convenience of island hopping on a wonderful ship, it seemed the ideal time to explore and enjoy Greece to the fullest!

Equipped with a trunk full of Terry gear and my trusty bicycle, I embarked on my journey with Santana Adventures to Athens, a city steeped in history and adorned with captivating ruins.

    Athens bathed in golden light.

Our adventures began in the charming coastal town of Nafplio, where we cycled along the picturesque Myrtoan Sea.  The rolling hills proved to be the perfect remedy for our travel-weary legs.

On day two, we were enchanted by the island of Paros.  It offered us fantastic cycling routes, charming cafes, vibrant shops, and a beautiful evening out in town.

For a change of pace on day three, we embarked on a scenic 6-mile hike from Oia to Fira on the captivating island of Santorini. This route is revered as one of the most beautiful walks on earth.

The trail led us by mesmerizing sights of countless stark white buildings, contrasted with stunning blue doors, perched on high cliffs.

To conclude the day’s outdoor escapades, I opted for a tram ride from the top of Fira to the Aegean Sea. This convenient mode of transportation spared me a slick 580 stair option, which is often shared with donkeys.

On the morning of October 16th, our ship docked in Rhodes, the vibrant capital of the Dodecanese Island group.  Situated in the southeastern Aegean Sea and the eastern Mediterranean, it is an immensely captivating destination just off the coast of Turkey.

Terry tops were everywhere, and our ride was headed to the beautiful Estate Anastasia Triantafyllou Vineyard, where we were treated to a delectable feast of moussaka and other delightful Grecian treats.  Jason, the host, graciously shared his family’s vineyard knowledge, adding a nice, personal touch to the day.

Rhodes’ nightlife was vibrant and pulsating with energy, offering a plethora of choices to suit every taste and preference. The options seemed endless and ensured there was something for everyone to enjoy.

The next day, the enchanting isle of Kos greeted us with breathtaking views and exhilarating climbs.

During our visit to Kos, we had the incredible opportunity to explore the Asclepieion, often referred to as the world’s first hospital. This historical site provided us with a fascinating glimpse into the birth of modern medicine.

Our next destination was Naxos. While on the island we had the pleasure of visiting a sixth-generation potter and were able to experience their timeless artistry firsthand.

We also explored the charming town of Chalki which was riddled with cobbled alleys and vibrant shops.

Our journey continued to the historic mountain town of Aperathos, where it was clear we had veered away from the white-washed buildings that decorate much of Greece and immersed ourselves in the charm of stone and marble architecture.  It was a wonderful change of scenery steeped in Venetian and Turkish history.

After a bustling day of exploration throughout Naxos, we returned to the boat on our very own shuttle tender for a late lunch. While we were dining the ship embarked on a 3-hour tour to the captivating old town of Mykonos.

On October 19th, the women on this cruise gathered in their favorite Terry cycling gear for a memorable afternoon of fun fueled by fashion. The photos captured the spirit of the event, and I am immensely grateful to all who participated, making it a fantastic last-minute rendezvous.

Leaving the Greek islands was undoubtedly difficult, as there is an abundance of sights left to see and a vast history to absorb. I will be back and hope to travel with these wonderful people again, too!

    Αντίο, Greece….until next time.

  • SHEDDING BURDENS & BOOSTING JOY.

Contributed by Terry Ambassador Adina Crawford

As we move into the New Year there is no better time to do a check-in with yourself and assess the burdens that could be hampering your daily living and impeding your peace of mind. It’s simple, carrying excess things that don’t serve you into 2023 will increase your emotional and mental load, so let’s leave them behind. It’s time to release the past, anger, fear, and anxiety that can cast a heavy shadow on your heart. When we release these burdens, we not only strengthen our hearts, but our minds and bodies as well.

    Find Boosters of Joy

There are many BOOSTERS OF JOY that can help you shed your burdens, find what fuels your fire and encourage you to think about how you desire to show up in the world. BOOSTERS OF JOY bring happiness, laughter, smiles and most importantly, a positive effect on your mental well being. There are so many big things, small things and in-between things that can serve as boosters.

    Here are my top suggestions:

Empower yourself to get out and exercise. Whether riding your bike, going for a hike, taking a leisurely walk or practicing yoga. Find joy through breath and the movement of your body. Let the bliss of all you’re capable of flow through you and send self-doubt out. EMPOWER your mind and feed the soul with the goodness of movement.

When you find yourself circling back to a dark space, pause and take three nourishing deep breaths. Let air fill up the belly and lungs and let a huge exhale out. Slowly repeat to yourself “I am not my thoughts.”

Adina leading a grounding stretch with her local Black Girls Run group

Surround yourself with a community that wants to see you thrive. Explore your passions and reach out to people with common interests. Finding a tribe of like minded people to share your passion is pure joy. If you aren’t finding the exact group you’re looking for, consider starting one yourself. You may be surprised how many people share your interests or goals!

Lastly, remind yourself your strength will always be greater than your struggle!

  • CYCLING HAVEN: POWERFUL IMPACT OF THE RIDE.

Every item I’ve ever purchased from Terry I’ve loved, lived, sweated, laughed, and cried in.” – Haven Lindsey

Haven Lindsey in her winning Soleil Long Sleeve Top

Just before the Holidays we received a heartfelt note and poem from Terry customer and newfound friend, Haven Lindsey. With her words, she beautifully expressed the tremendous impact cycling has had on her and voiced how Terry gear helped her heal when life was putting her through the paces. Her message deeply resonated with our team and reminded us all of what sets Terry apart from the status quo. We are honored to share Haven’s powerful prose with you here.

    Dear Terry

    “Hello Everyone at Terry Bicycles!

I have wanted to write a note to you all for a few years. (And no, I have never written a note to a store!)

About 10 years ago, when I was living in Maine, I went through a god-awful divorce after losing the boy we had raised for 13 years. I was broken and shattered in every possible way and it took me a long time to bounce back. The thing that helped me do so was my bike. At the time (despite having had my life savings embezzled), I ordered some things from Terry, and even this morning riding my bike on my trainer, I wore a pair of Terry tights that I ordered a few years ago.

I’ve moved around since my divorce but have landed happy and healthy in Taos, NM. I am not a big-purchasing customer of yours because I’m not in the financial position to do so but I assure you, every item I’ve ever purchased from Terry I’ve loved, lived, sweated, laughed, and cried in. I’ve healed in Terry, I’ve healed with Terry which probably sounds corny but it’s true. When you grieve in certain “outfits” and become vulnerable everything has meaning – even the clothes you’re wearing.

I am a writer and this is a poem I wrote titled The Mourning Ride about my experience. I’ve always wanted to share with you that your shorts and tights have been with me every turn of the wheel. On my most broken days, I would wear my favorite Paris Eiffel Tower Soleil Long Sleeve Shirt to help me feel better, like I mattered like there would be another world waiting after the pain (there was).

Anyway, because it’s the holidays and because I am feeling grateful for where I am today, I thought I would finally share just how helpful your bright, fun, quality, cycling gear has helped me.

Happy holidays, Terry. You have helped make my world a better place to be.

The Mourning Ride By Haven Lindsey

    Empty on the inside

While life was being lived all around me

    Nothing felt like it fit

    Including me

    Words fell flat

    Hugs didn’t land

    Food had no taste

    Life lost its flavor

    My faith kept me upright

    My bike helped me heal

    The cadence

    The pedals

    The rhythm of my breath

    The sounds of the gears

    Miles of solitude

I let the tears fall from my heart

    Exhaustion felt better than empty

    The tears and the sweat

    The crashes and the flats

The poems that started to come

The cracks in my heart that started to mend

    The light was still there

The smiles started to come when I would see a dog

    or a flock of geese

or a momma deer with her fawn

    Without thought I pedaled

From my darkness to the light

    Hundreds of rides

    Thousands of miles

    Gallons of tears

And then one day the tears stopped

    But I didn’t.

    Reasons We Ride

At Terry, everything we do is fueled by the mission of encouraging women to ride. We believe our wheels are our wings and every woman should experience the freedom and solace of cycling. On the tailwinds of Haven’s mighty message, Terry Team members were inspired to speak on the impact cycling has had on their lives and how riding will propel them in 2023.

“I ride for many reasons, but for starters, I dislike driving! I ride for errands and for scenic vistas – you just can’t beat a Lake Champlain sunset. I believe wildflowers and wildlife are best experienced on two wheels. When the weather turns cold a favorite pursuit of mine is periodically checking on a local icefall, something you can only experience by foot or bike. I love to feel the sunshine kiss my face while I ride, the rhythmic pedaling meditative and soul cleansing. Lately, I’ve found peace by riding dirt trails or exploring the growing list of regional trails like the Empire Trail in New York. In 2023, I’m looking forward to the completion of Vermont’s cross-state Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, and plan to explore more of New Hampshire’s Northern Trail. My motto: Embrace life at bike speed.

    – Annie, Customer Care

One of Annie’s many bikes posed next to icefall and outfitted with the Liberator X Gel Italia Saddle

“Even those of us in the industry find ourselves thrown off course, losing sight of 2 wheels, patiently awaiting the rubber to hit the road. So, as the New Year approaches, leaving behind it the struggles and grief of losing a mom, the road to repair is on the horizon (along with temps above freezing!). This girl resolves to reconnect and simply RIDE MORE. RIDE OFTEN.”

    – Kelly, Marketing

I began riding and training for a century ride just before my 40th Birthday.  I cruised past that birthday milestone in the best shape ever, and the century rides gave me great confidence in all aspects of my life going forward. Riding has taught me you can do anything with focus and confidence!!

    – Lisa, Customer Care

Lisa forging her way via fat bike

“Haven’s poem about riding after the loss of her child hit home for me. Although I haven’t submerged myself fully in riding, I have found the same healing in the water. I often ask myself: what’s keeping me from riding?? This year, I’ve made a goal for myself to ride at least 5 days a week, even if just a short leisurely ride. I hope this will be a driving change towards what makes me feel best. ” – Danielle, Accounting

“Cycling has long been my good mood fuel; I love the joyful rush that is revealed with each revolution. If life brings me down, my wheels turn me topside. I love the way riding has deepened my connection to my local community and introduced me to lifelong friends. Whenever I go riding, I always see a friendly and familiar face. In 2023, I aim to volunteer more frequently with local Vermont non-profits Old Spokes Home, Betty’s Bikes, and Local Motion to help make cycling more accessible, safe, and fun for ALL. Aside from that, I’m hoping to jet out to California for some quality riding time with my Grandy and Pops!”

  • FAVORITE QUOTES FROM THE WEEK.

“The pause button has been pushed.”

    I’m a girl scout at heart…

If you tell me something is about to happen, I prepare.  In Vermont, this scenario usually comes in the form of an impending snow storm. I am the person who checks the pantry to be sure we have a day or two’s stock of everyone’s favorite goodies and basic staples.

For the past two weeks I have behaved in a similar manner, with one exception… I knew we would need more than a day or two inventory to get through, and since I live with my mother, the fewer trips out into public the better.

As of last Friday, all was good at home, my office grew to more of an at home command center and I was ready for all that might unfold.  The new Terry catalog was arriving in homes and lots of spring rides were in the planning stages, so I had no shortage of projects to keep me busy.

Today, I have a new hurdle…. how do I navigate the quiet waiting?  With a snow storm, I go to the window to see how many exciting inches have fallen, and dress for a romp in the snow with my dog.

This is not exciting, and we’ve all been in need of support.  So I looked to my wonderful customers and here are some of their thoughts of inspiration and direction:

“Dress for the weather and enjoy the lighter traffic!! ”  Nancy in Indiana

“We can still ride, right?!” Buffi in New Hampshire

“My bike is powered by positive thinking.”  Terri in Pennsylvania

“The weather is too nice to ignore.” Melissa in Florida

“This is an opportunity to focus on ourselves and our well-being, because for this one moment the pause button has been pushed. Don’t squander this opportunity to focus on yourself and do some of those back burner things. Declutter your life by only adding back to your routine those things that really inspire you.”  Anne-Christine in California

“The last few weeks I’ve been eating my way through the stress and I am grateful for the relaxed fit options as I get back on track!” Lisa in Vermont

“Thrilled to see an Indigo short.” Marti in Colorado

“Rode from Paris to Prague last year and hope to bike in Spain later this year…in the meantime I’m still riding outside even though it’s still chilly here.”  Felice in Oregon

“I bought a spin bike 3 months ago and am very grateful for not only the exercise but the mental health boost.”  Sharon in greater Chicago area

“I forced myself to ride today, because I knew I’d feel better…and I did.”  Kelly in Pennsylvania

And a few that came after our CEO, Liz, sent out a note about what we are doing in the midst of all this:

“Thank you for this message. I appreciate each effort made for all of us. Here in MN, snow still around, howeevr biking will be possible eventually. Always to improve outlook, and literally practice balance. Virtual hugs,”  Lin in Minnesota

“Good on you, Liz and your team! It’s because of your conscientiousness, I’ll continue to be a loyal customer and refer you to all my bicycle riding friends.” Long-time customer, Anita

“Thank you for communicating this. I am so glad to see that as a small business you are able to prioritize employee health and safety along with continuing operations and customer service. I was already a loyal customer, and this is just another reason to remain so!” Another long-time customer, Kathy

From all of us at Terry – THANK YOU for hanging in there with us and giving us these words of encouragement. You keep us rolling.

Lisa Wilkes has built the customer service department for Terry and gets more personal fan mail than all the rest of us combined. She’s also in charge of our Ambassador program, runs events and supports women’s cycling in a wide variety of ways. As a former cycling coach, this all comes naturally to her and as a result, we lean on her for advice and morale boosting – now more than ever.

  • TERRY TEAM: MEET LENORE IMHOF.

    Lenore Racing

Whether she is recharging her batteries on a bike, or juggling her busy schedule, this month’s newest Terry teammate never stops rolling.

Lenore balances a career as a school teacher and an attorney; family life, including her cycle-loving mom and rescue-dog Jake; volunteering and training for her next adventure.

She began cycling in 6th grade when Santa brought her a shiny new Silver Ross 10 speed with red lettering. She hoped it would give her skinnier legs; instead it gave her a love of cycling. It was her outlet when her dad was struggling with Parkinson’s; and again when career changes inspired dream changes; in addition, it provides fuel for all things everyday life throws her way.

While her resume includes her high school’s “Teacher of the Year Award” and numerous other professional accolades, it’s her lifelong love of sports that got my attention. She began swimming at age 4, which lead to her role as captain of the Georgetown University NCAA Division 1 swim team and many strong triathlon finishes…including a big win right here in Vermont.

Her first bike race was in ’96 and she went on to race for many teams including Colavita Bolla and Colavita Cooking Light as a Cat 2 Domestique. She loves the team energy, maneuvers, speed, and strategy.

She has a tough time choosing her best day ever on the bike and in many ways hopes that day is yet to come. Some of her favorites include the 30+ women’s 3-day, 4-race Coupe des Amerique win in Quebec in 2002; the Tuesday Night Race Series at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in NJ; and the “underdog” Colavita Cooking Light women’s win at the 4-day “Tour of Fitchburg.”

When her big racing days ended with repeated herniated disks in her neck, she moved to Minnesota for a summer. Here, Lenore renewed her love of cycling on trails, in the mountains, and on single track; riding like she did as a kid in NJ, for fun, wearing skorts and meeting lots of wonderful people.

While her pre-ride food is often a French or Italian roast coffee, she has many healthy eating habits like fruity protein yogurt smoothies, salmon, and leafy salads with red peppers. Lenore has brought her lunch to school every day for 21 years–she calls this her Terry clothing budget builder!

When Lenore checks in at Terry, we love to hear about all of her new endeavors and all she is doing to make her community a better place. Her goal for 2016 is good advice for all of us, more stretching!

It’s great to have you on our team, Lenore!

  • HOW TO BIKE WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND…

    …and your dog.

    IMG_0738

On March 5th, a puppy named Bowin came into my life. My sincere belief was that she would have no effect on my biking habits. As a surprise to no one, I was quite wrong.

We had big dreams of a well trained dog, running alongside us as we would ride gracefully down the bike path but at 12 weeks old, she had different ideas. After shopping around for a bit, I was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty wide selection of options to deal with our bike-dog conundrum.

There are two main categories for coupling your two best friends: bike leashes and bike trailers. Bike leashes are a bike component that attach to the bike and also to the dog’s collar. The concept is to allow your dog to run alongside the bike while still being loosely attached to discourage wandering. I can understand going this route with a really high energy dog with the focus of your ride being to tire your leash-loving K-9 out. This was not the case for us; we needed her to be transported to and from work with us on our daily commutes so we chose the second option – a bike trailer.

These days, as crazy dog people become more prolific, there are bike trailers made specifically with dogs in mind. They are often top- rather than front-entry and have harness or leash attachments included. We decided to go with a trailer made for children that my coworker had in her barn and it works wonderfully.

On my first ride, with the trailer, sans the puppy, I was pleasantly surprised at how little the trailer interfered with my ride. However, it did prove a bit more challenging once the 25lb Bowin was in the trailer, jumping around like a crazy woman accompanied with a strong headwind. She howled and barked and squirmed the entirety of the first 10 miles, and a good chunk of the next 10, but by the third or forth trip she got the hang of things.

Even with it’s challenges, biking with Bowin has quickly become the best part of my day and I will leave you with this charming video of a rare peaceful moment.

  • A WINNING TERRY STORY.

Every once in a while, we offer the chance to win a Terry Bicycle. The most fun is letting someone know they’ve won. We just had to share this lucky winner’s response…

Screen Shot 2016-04-05 at 9.07.01 AM

    Dear Lisa and the Gals,
Instead of giving you my height and inseam, I want to share with you my Terry Story. I’m not a random internet email winner.

You have no idea the synchronicity that just occurred. I haven’t been able to ride much since my severe trimalleolar ankle fracture 7 years ago.  How it happened? Not on a bike, just walking down a slippery slope.

But just this morning after physical therapy was going so well (6 months after my second ankle surgery), I hoped and dreamed of riding again. Riding my favorite bike anytime. My beloved Terry.

I went to the garage to get ready.  In my saddle bag, there was my lost spare key fob, gone 6 months. I couldn’t believe my luck. After a 6 month recovery, what a lucky find.  I thought, “the gods are smiling and telling me its time to ride again. It’s OK. It’s time. I won’t hurt my ankle, and make things worse”. But my ankle was getting sore, so I decided to sit, ice, and check my emails.

And that’s when I read your email and wanted to jump up and down, but mostly shuffled, cried and said, “OMG,OMG,OMG. I wish they knew my whole Terry Story: the why and the how it became my favorite bike. How it gave me the comfort and security to go from riding 1 city block to hundreds of country miles.”

    Sincerely in Terry Bicycle Love,

P.S. If you insist on giving me the bike, I want to coordinate it with the Boise Bike Project to find the best size for a suitable woman in need of a bike.  Let’s keep in touch.

  • DREAM RIDE: CYCLING IN MALLORCA.

Epic mountain rides, switchbacks and dramatic seascapes – Welcome to Mallorca, Spain.

    IMG_1712

If you’re considering an international cycling vacation to Mallorca, March is a good time to go. The roads are quiet, other than the occasional pro-team on a training ride, and daytime temps rise into the 60s. That being said – avoid the week before Easter, as it is a busy German holiday and the beginning of the high tourism season.

Be sure to have a car handy as it gives you access to epic mountain rides to the north with switchback turns and dramatic seascapes, or alternatively, to quiet farm country roads in the south that meander to old world fishing villages and brilliant white sandy beaches nestled in cavernous inlets carved into the rocky coastline. WARNING: Images below may evoke wanderlust, or an insatiable desire for travel.

  • DREAM GEAR: CYCLING IN MALLORCA.

Gear that “made the ride” while on the bike vacation of a lifetime.

The epic sights were without question the best part of the ride – but coming in at a close second? My shorts.

The Bella Prima Bib Shorts were a ride saver. The Flex Air chamois provides padding in all the right places while the soft wing construction eliminates bunching and chafing letting me focus on the ride rather than the shorts. For hurried pit stops at seaside cafes, I simply unzipped my jacket and jersey and pulled the stretchy, open mesh halter-top up over my helmet!

Paired with the bib, I wore the full zip, super lightweight, moisture wicking Terry Bella Jersey and matching arm warmers and a sleeveless base layer for maximum versatility as temps fluctuate with altitude and proximity to the sea. The UPF 50+ fabric is a bonus in the Mediterranean sun. Have you ever seen the Mediterranean sun? It looks a lot like this –

For colder, wetter days? I chose the Terry Thermal Tights. They are so brushed and comfy, and make you feel like you are swimming in warm butter. With a DWR finish, they are remarkably wind resistant and even provide protection in a light drizzle.

Pairing this with the Mandarin Thermal Jersey I stayed warm and dry without over heating through my ride. Even without the gear however, I think I would have found a way to continue cycling when the scenery looked like this:

In the North where roads were relatively smooth, I most certainly benefitted from the range of motion and slimmer profile provided by my FLX Gel saddle.

However, on some of the rougher southern roads and in villages with cobblestones I did wish that I had the shock absorbing PORON XRD found in the Butterfly Century.

Also handy? Knog high lumen lights. They are easy to strap on, are available as front and rear lights and invaluable for tunnels particularly in the Tramuntana Mountains with its beautiful alpine like villages.

And last but NOT least: Fly Swiss International and your bike will travel for $125 each way. And if you’re lucky, it might even get a free ride. Also, make sure you have new tires (25cm) on that bike!
