  • CELEBRATING OUR CYCLING MOMS DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN.

Antique bike with a basket full of flowers, text overlay says Happy Mothers Day

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Terry Moms – even on lockdown!

The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped our lives in so many ways, but Mother’s Day 2020 brings a poignant new twist – this is the first time there’s no possibility of booking a table for Mother’s Day brunch, and for many of us, no opportunity to give our Moms a hug, or even to get together in person at all.

On the other hand, some of us are lucky enough to have Mom be part of our “pod”, the circle of people we’re isolating with. Even so, options for gift giving and celebrating are definitely restricted this year.

Whatever the difficulties, gratitude and love for Moms abounds, and we’ll be celebrating. This calls for some creativity, but maybe the best approach is to get back to basics – as Natalie P. puts it: flowers, food, family – even if some of that has to be virtual now. And as always at Terry – bike rides.

Here’s what the team at Terry has in mind to make the day a special one for the Moms in our lives.

We hope to get out on a bike ride and have a picnic if the weather is permitting. Here we are on our first family bike ride together from one month ago. Otherwise, Dani is hoping for a relaxing soak in the tub.

Mother's DAy tableau, bicycle art, fine wine with cycling themed label, the latest Terry catalog.I’ve been fortunate to be able to spend the last 10 years living near my mom and having her help me with Terry. She’s been the source of all kinds of assistance and my favorite motivating phrase, “Buck up!” Most recently, she provided some inspiration from her Basque roots for our newest summer prints. Although she’ll probably want to work on Mother’s Day, we are going to celebrate with a proper toast to her.

My mom lives in Rhode Island, but frequently treks up the coast to come see me here in Vermont. Normally, we would likely spend Mother’s Day hiking, dipping our toes in the lake for the first time this year, vegging out on an epic charcuterie, and of course watching tearjerkers or 80s comedies together. In lieu of being able to be together this Mother’s Day, I cultivated a gift basket to send her with some of her Vermont favorites like: bagels from her favorite shop, crystallized maple sprinkles, small batch homemade marshmallows, a nice bubble bath from a local natural soap shop, and a gift certificate to our go-to wine bar. My mom is an incredibly giving and selfless person so it feels wonderful to spoil her with goodies, and it’s great to be able to support local businesses and the friends who operate them!

I couldn’t quite find any pictures of my mom on a bicycle, but if I could fit her in a tow behind buggy I would tow her around for a fun Mother’s Day treat.  I anticipate heading to my parents’ house on Sunday to see my mom. My siblings and I will be outside occupying six sections of her rectangle lawn with a small fire pit in the middle, visiting but still social distancing. It’s as much for me as it is for her.

happy kid with cookieFor me as a mom, I will also get to spend the day with my daughter and pup, as well as facetime with my older boys who are grown and out of the house. My granddaughter, Aria, almost three years old, will of course also be on the phone, a highlight of any day!

If the weather cooperates, we’ll give Kathy the choice of a hike in a nearby state park where there’s enough space for good distancing, or the first family bike ride of the season. She treats us to gourmet meals all year long, but on Mother’s Day we’ll turn the tables and treat her to our best meal prep for brunch and dinner. Prosciutto wrapped scallops will be on the menu, along with strawberry shortcake. We’ll also give her plenty of time in the garden with some plants and maybe a new tree to commemorate – from a favorite nursery where shopping is by appointment now to keep staff and shoppers safe.

We will be celebrating Mom’s birthday and Mother’s Day this weekend, and we have something new to celebrate… we have transported our spin bike to her living room and we have added a nice Terry Cite X Gel saddle.

For Mother’s Day and Mom’s birthday, my mom is planning to climb in the saddle for the first time in years, and celebrate another great year.

Since my Mum is pretty much at home these days, we’ll prepare a special dinner for her and support a favorite local restaurant – the Blue Paddle in South Hero. Fingers crossed for her first choice on their menu – lamb!

I plan on celebrating my Mom this year with some fresh picked spring blooms from the garden, homemade brunch, and a Zoom game night with the whole fam. Sticking to some Mother’s Day basics – flowers, food, and family!

  • TRIBUTE TO A CYCLING MOM.

This special post is contributed by Noah Jones, to celebrate his Mom, Tory Jones, on Mother’s Day 2018. Read more about Tory, one of Terry’s sponsored athletes, here.

With Mother’s day around the corner, it got me thinking about my own mother, Tory Jones. I was hoping to share with the Terry community a bit about this special lady, through my eyes. For those of you who don’t know my mother, she is a woman who wears many hats. Her many hats impact several aspects of my life, beginning with my personality. My mom has shaped my personality by showing me how to love and care for those around me with such compassion and generosity – the very way she does, in our family of six and within the multi sport community.

The next facet of my life she impacts is my academic career. Her daily perseverance as a female fire fighter, mother, wife, and as an incredibly resilient athlete through workouts and injuries, has taught me to forge bravely through my life. She inspires me to always give my best effort, regardless of the difficulties or obstacles I may face. “Challenges are merely bumps along the road that will lead you to your dreams,” she has often told me. And I know that my friendly and positive outlook on a bright and sunny tomorrow will shape my future and impact those around me.

My mom challenges me to follow my heart, chase my dreams and inspires me to be the young man I have become. She has taught me that all women deserve to be treated with kindness and respect, and that I should strive to be a positive role model, and to be the very change I want to see in society.

Finally, she has had a tremendous impact on my athletic life. My mom serves as my coach and training partner. Every training ride thrown down on the bike, and each kilometre knocked down on runs, is done beside my role model and best friend – my mother and her many hats!

I hope this article not only pays tribute to my amazing mother Tory Jones, but also demonstrates to all readers how impactful the many roles mothers play on the lives of their children.

So to on behalf of all of your children, and those whose hearts you touch and whose lives you inspire the most – Thank you to every Mother, for being so selfless every single day! WE LOVE YOU!!!

    Noah Jones

The outdoors has always been an inspiration, thanks to my parent’s love of Vermont, and I have tried to pass this along to my three children, who are my greatest accomplishments in life. Living in Vermont has allowed me to pursue my passions including sailing, skiing, biking or anything that keeps me feeling the energy and freedom of Mother Nature.

Vermont’s four seasons allow you to get involved with different activities all year long. Skiing in the winter, mountain biking in the fall, competitive sailing on Lake Champlain or road biking on the beautiful back roads of Vermont in the summer, this is enough to inspire anyone. I truly am a Vermonter thru and thru.

I have had an interest in cycling starting with my first Schwinn Sting Ray bike in my younger years. Terry Bicycles has been a perfect fit that has given me the opportunity to expand my career in the outdoor industry and allowed me to stay true to my passions. My morning commute on my State Bicycle Company single speed on Burlington’s beautiful bike path is my favorite way to start a day. Last year I was able to log in 3500 miles on the road bike and ride in a variety of new cities and locations.

I am a Type 1 diabetic, so these activities are an important part of my life and Terry Bicycles, Vermont and my family have given me the inspiration and opportunity to stay true to my passion for a healthier lifestyle in the great outdoors.

  • TERRY TEAM: MEET LENORE IMHOF.

    Lenore Racing

Whether she is recharging her batteries on a bike, or juggling her busy schedule, this month’s newest Terry teammate never stops rolling.

Lenore balances a career as a school teacher and an attorney; family life, including her cycle-loving mom and rescue-dog Jake; volunteering and training for her next adventure.

She began cycling in 6th grade when Santa brought her a shiny new Silver Ross 10 speed with red lettering. She hoped it would give her skinnier legs; instead it gave her a love of cycling. It was her outlet when her dad was struggling with Parkinson’s; and again when career changes inspired dream changes; in addition, it provides fuel for all things everyday life throws her way.

While her resume includes her high school’s “Teacher of the Year Award” and numerous other professional accolades, it’s her lifelong love of sports that got my attention. She began swimming at age 4, which lead to her role as captain of the Georgetown University NCAA Division 1 swim team and many strong triathlon finishes…including a big win right here in Vermont.

Her first bike race was in ’96 and she went on to race for many teams including Colavita Bolla and Colavita Cooking Light as a Cat 2 Domestique. She loves the team energy, maneuvers, speed, and strategy.

She has a tough time choosing her best day ever on the bike and in many ways hopes that day is yet to come. Some of her favorites include the 30+ women’s 3-day, 4-race Coupe des Amerique win in Quebec in 2002; the Tuesday Night Race Series at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in NJ; and the “underdog” Colavita Cooking Light women’s win at the 4-day “Tour of Fitchburg.”

When her big racing days ended with repeated herniated disks in her neck, she moved to Minnesota for a summer. Here, Lenore renewed her love of cycling on trails, in the mountains, and on single track; riding like she did as a kid in NJ, for fun, wearing skorts and meeting lots of wonderful people.

While her pre-ride food is often a French or Italian roast coffee, she has many healthy eating habits like fruity protein yogurt smoothies, salmon, and leafy salads with red peppers. Lenore has brought her lunch to school every day for 21 years–she calls this her Terry clothing budget builder!

When Lenore checks in at Terry, we love to hear about all of her new endeavors and all she is doing to make her community a better place. Her goal for 2016 is good advice for all of us, more stretching!

It’s great to have you on our team, Lenore!

  • TERRY TEAM: MEET HYLA VICK.

photo courtesy of Tour de Palm Springs

Hyla Vick from Laguna Niguel, CA is the newest member of Team Terry.

Her most recent ride was the 18th annual Tour de Palm Springs, where Hyla rode 51 miles over the course of the weekend. The ride supports over 100 local charities in Coachella Valley and has tallied up over $3,000,000 in contributions since its inception. Riders can choose to ride up to 100 miles with a minimum of 10. There’s even a fun 1-3 mile walk for those without wheels. The weather, scenery, and thousands of riders make it an event like no other.

Hyla’s favorite pieces of cycling apparel: the Bella Prima Knickers for warmer days;  Thermal Tight when it’s cooler. “I was comfortable for the entire ride (54 degrees at beginning and 65 degrees at the end.) The knickers were so comfortable, I didn’t want to take them off after the ride.”

Hyla knows the “look good, feel good” mentality also comes from a good post-ride treat. Her favorite is an order of french fries, which also makes for great motivation to find more 50 mile rides.

Screen Shot 2016-02-12 at 2.11.44 PM

One cycling destination that Hyla recommends all riders is Orange County, CA. “We have beautiful bike trails with majestic ocean views, amazing hills, and some of the best year round weather for riding!” We’re packing now.

Hyla’s charisma and kindness is contagious, and we’re grateful to have her as a part of our team.

  • TERRY TEAM: MEET SHELLEY GAUTIER.

    Shelley Gautier

Terry Teammate Shelley Gautier was the first female T-1 racer on the Canadian Para-Cycling team.

Shelley has twice been named “Road Female Athlete of the Year” by Ontario Cycling Association, earned 12 World Championship Gold Medals , was a torchbearer and Silver Medalist at the Parapan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and we could go on!

A native of Niagara Falls, Shelley began her love of cycling as a mountain bike racer. After an accident in 2001, she changed out her wheels and has climbed to ever-new heights.

Shelley says her best day ever on a bike was her first ride after the accident on her new race trike. “Hopefully,” says Gautier, “people with disabilities can see me competing, and think they can do it as well”. Through her foundation, Shelley Gautier Para-Sport Foundation, she “actively works to make sports more accessible, and to create programs – around the world – in which people with a disability can not only play the games they love, but work as coaches, trainers and in related jobs”.

Shelley is currently training for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an eleven day event with more than 4,000 athletes from 176 countries. Her rigorous training schedule to prepare for Rio de Janeiro, up to 5 times per week, is best finished with a sushi pizza.

We are proud to have Shelley as a part of our team and honored to call her our friend.

  • TERRY TEAM: MEET TERRI SHADE.

    10712924_10204853534840988_6560487487145648078_n

Terry VIP Terri Shade has been cycling for 12 years and shares her beautiful smile with everyone along the way.

This fall Terri completed her 6th YSC Tour de Pink, a 3 day, 250 mile bike ride. Motivated by the opportunity to honor survivors, raise awareness and support important programs for young women affected by breast cancer, Terri is a role model for everyone who rides with her.

Not long ago, Terry Customer Service received a phone call from a Tour de Pink rider who wanted to send her teammate a new Bella Prima Knicker.

“Was your teammate Terri Shade?” we asked.  “Yes”, she replied. “When I arrived at the Tour, I realized I had left my riding shorts behind. Before I could turn around, Terri had handed me her brand new knickers, still in the package, and completely made my ride”.

  • TERRY TEAM: Meet Sheilah Chisholm.

    Sheilah Chisholm
“Got the shorts and rode a comfortable 100 miles Saturday!”

Sheilah began cycling early in the spinning-craze years, and is a spin instructor when she’s not out on the road.

She loves the camaraderie as well as the health benefits of cycling.  This photo was taken two weeks ago when a group of friends wanted to do a “century” just for the fun of it! She said that she couldn’t have done it without her Terry Bella Shorts.

Today, she is completing the “Louisiana MS 150” from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana to McComb, Mississippi and back again.

3 cheers to Sheilah for supporting the MS Society and for inspiring others in their endeavors!
