  • WELL SAID, WELLNESS REVOLUTION.

Entering its ninth year, the Wellness Revolution is a program developed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont and Terry to get more women riding bikes safely and comfortably. This special program promotes healthier lifestyles and riding confidence over the course of a 4-6 week training period. In 2022, following a pandemic hiatus, the program came back stronger than ever introducing a third chapter in the Northeast Kingdom alongside the Burlington and Rutland chapters.

Beyond great exercise and camaraderie, the Wellness Revolution includes sessions on bike maintenance, mindfulness, urban and gravel riding techniques, cross training and more. Through this program we have experienced firsthand the effect that having a supportive group, all seeking to thrive via cycling, can have. In celebration of the New Year, new chapter, and new outlooks gained, Wellness graduates, program leaders, and instructors shared how the Wellness Revolution has impacted them.

“I have ridden bikes all my life, but consider myself a casual rider. I learned so much from this program; my confidence has soared! I even learned things that I didn’t know I needed to know. Thank you again for this life enhancing opportunity!”  Sandi R.

Wellness Coordinator Speaks On Opening New Chapter

With the community rallying behind us, we moved quickly to launch the program at the end of September. We knew we were pushing the limits, as shorter daylight hours and cooler temps would soon be upon us. And yet, within days of opening registration, we had a full roster of women excited to join us and a group of exceptional coaches ready to lend support.

Our hopes and dreams were realized very early on. Within minutes of meeting each other, in a round-table activity, the women opened to the process, exposing their vulnerability, as one by one they shared the fears, concerns, hopes and dreams cycling held for them. From that moment, a culture of empowerment, support and compassion became rooted in the ties that brought us all together. Leading this group, I was reminded about what I love most about cycling and what became a shared connection within the group: enjoying the scenic byways and beauty of Vermont, the power of a supportive cycling community, the process of overcoming obstacles and fears that live within us and emerging feeling more confident and ready to take on that next adventure, and knowing at the end of the day I could feel (hello, legs and lungs!) that we are stronger than we imagined we could be.

The educational pieces of the program are a fundamental component, evidenced on our very first group ride, when one cyclist declared she had experienced a spiritual awakening to learn her bike had gears! That in itself, was a life changing experience. The Wellness Revolution program set the foundation for this incredible experience, building on fundamental skills and instilling a love for cycling and outdoor recreation. There were tears of joy shed and hugs shared, as everyone celebrated each others’ victories. Nothing speaks more to this than our final group ride which provided our cyclists with two mileage options: a 15 or 20 mile loop. In the spirit of their strong connection as a group, the women who planned to do the longer loop, declared at the last moment that they wished to do the shorter route so they could all ride together. And so it continues, well beyond the end of the program.

For some participants, it had been a long time since they last took to the saddle. Bethany Yon, hadn’t been on a bike in more than 25 years when she joined the Revolution “You know that old adage, ‘it’s like riding a bike?’ Well, not for me,” she says. “I was close to walking away because I was so intimidated. Program instructors made all the difference, though, breaking down each part of riding—from how to kick off to when to shift gears—until every woman felt confident enough to ride on the road.”

Our wheels are our wings but it’s always good to have a back up.

From The Mouths of Bike Babes: Wellness Alumni Quotes

“Such excellent thought and planning went into developing this program. I didn’t expect the extra classes designed to help you maintain your bike, or to learn specific stretches & strength exercises to help with biking. The class with a certified gravel/MTB trainer was awesome. The mindfulness class and just the overall encouragement throughout that I could do this was so confidence building. I have certain goals in riding and how I approach them now will be totally different than I originally thought because of what I learned in class and from just being out there doing it and learning from other riders.”

The Wellness Revolution came into my life just when I needed it most. I am so grateful for the wonderful and welcoming group of leaders and participants in the program for not only reassuring me that I’m not alone in my trepidation after an accident but that I am also more than capable of reclaiming my love of cycling.

“It has had such a positive impact on my outlook and motivation for getting out”

“This was a well run, well organized event. Everyone was very encouraging, cheerful and supportive to all riders no matter their ability level. It was a great kick start especially for people who hadn’t ridden in a long time.”

Many spoke on a not-so-unexpected benefit of the Wellness Revolution: the friendships they found with fellow riders.

    Friends for life

This was an unexpected late summer opportunity to meet new people, get outside and rekindle a love for cycling, and learn and become more confident in taking care of my bicycle on my own! It was also fun seeing and re-connecting with a few women I hadn’t seen in years… All in all, I am energized to continue cycling and perhaps even upgrading my old Hybrid Mountain Bike!”

I was so happy to build connection with other like-minded women who enjoy the out of doors and exercising for our health and well being.”

“Finding a group of ladies to ride with!! I love it. I am looking toward pursuing winter biking with them.”

The program introduced me to women, of all levels, who want to get out riding.

I think this group of women will continue to gather for biking but there was also mention of cross country skiing, hiking or other outdoor activities. So exciting!”

“Safety in numbers! Love this group and all of the support”

The bonds built during the Wellness Revolution have gone far beyond the bike, yet always return to it. By providing access to this encouraging environment, Terry and BCBSVT have also created a space for Vermont women to grow and be uplifted in other arenas in their life.

    Dynamic Duo Behind It All

“We encourage women across the spectrum of cycling comfort levels to join us. Whether you are just starting out or are looking to get exercise in a supported way, this free program advances women’s cycling abilities, builds confidence, and provides an opportunity to connect in a fun, supportive environment.”

-Megan Peek, Community Relations and Health Education Manager at Blue Cross

“The Wellness Revolution program reminds me of all the things cycling has done for me. It provides the grit and determination to try new things, the confidence in knowing you’re stronger than you think, and develops new friendships that can last a lifetime. My eight-year affiliation with the Wellness Revolution, BCBS of Vermont and Megan Peek is great example of this.”

  • WELCOME BACK, WELLNESS.

After a pandemic hiatus, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont & Terry Bicycles Wellness Revolution is back. Launched in 2014, the program is designed to get more women riding bikes, safely and comfortably, and promotes healthier lifestyles over the course of a 4-6 week training program.

Beyond great exercise and camaraderie, the Wellness Revolution includes sessions on bike maintenance, mindfulness, urban riding techniques, cross training and more. The effect of having a supportive group all wanting to thrive via cycling has had a tremendous impact on all of us at Terry and Blue Cross, and helps shape our understanding of the barriers to getting more women riding.

“Before taking part in the Wellness Revolution, I wasn’t comfortable riding my bike in traffic and I struggled with hills,” says Becky Campbell, a Wellness Revolution alumnus. “Over the course of the program, I built confidence so that I’m not afraid to take my bike onto a busy road, and I have a much better understanding of how to tackle those hills!”

Wellness Grad Rides on to National Competition

“Last summer, the opportunity to join a women-specific cycling workshop in Rutland popped up on my Facebook feed. Intrigued to meet other women cyclists, I immediately signed up. The overall experience was beyond my expectations because the classes gave the women an opportunity to learn about cycling and develop a positive and inclusive experience. I come from an experienced cycling background; however, the sessions offered a variety of information that women of all abilities could benefit; whether it be changing a flat tire, fitting a helmet, and even learning to ride an E-Bike. I remember with a big smile the look of shock on some of the women’s faces when they learned that underwear is not worn under bike shorts! At the end of the event, the Wellness Revolution women rode with a sense of confidence and joy.

“On a personal note, the cycling group propelled me into going beyond my comfort level in road cycling. One of the women in the group suggested I cycle in the Vermont Senior Games Championship 40K Road Race that was held last September. I spent a few weeks training for the event, and ultimately finished 2nd place in my age category! Wow! This event automatically qualified me to compete in the 2022 National Senior Games in Fort Lauderdale, Florida being held at the end of this May. Over the winter, I cycled many miles on a Tacx bike trainer in combination with daily strength training for the event. In addition, I communicated via email other Vermont participants to discuss training methods, diet, and motivation.

I look forward meeting and riding with the Vermont cyclists in person at the National Senior Games as well as giving 110% of my cycling ability as I represent the State of Vermont! Thank you, Terry Bikes, for opening the door to the world of cycling for Rutland area women.

  • WELLNESS WINNER.

Terry/BCBS Wellness Revolution Finale Ride, Kicks Off With the Winner of the Bike Drawing

It was late May in Vermont: still cool, cloudy and recently much too rainy for comfort. Luckily, Mother Nature smiled on us for the last day of the Spring Wellness Revolution session, and gave us bright, sunny conditions – great for a group ride for our graduating program participants.

Everyone had their choice of distances: 5, 10, or 20 miles on undulating suburban and rural roads south of Burlington Vermont. The Terry team rode as group leaders or supporters, and everyone rocked the ride, celebrating new skills and confidence with new friends. As usual, those distinctive green helmets helped everyone stand out!

An early highlight of the day was the presentation of the prize drawing. One lucky participant was able to enjoy a first ride on a brand new Terry bicycle!

Congratulations to Gale, lucky winner of a new Terry Symmetry Drop Bar bicycle.

Women's Wellness Revolution Program particiapnts gather on Burlington's waterfront for an urban cycling riding workshop

On a brisk Saturday morning in early May, Terry team members Colin Sturgess, David Howard, Serena Wilcox, Jeannette Segale, Karyn Lewis and Megan Peek (from BCBS) all joined me on the Burlington waterfront for the first Wellness Revolution weekend ride of 2019, along with approximately 30 participants!

The bright green Giro helmets made quite a visual. Everyone was timely, and happy to help! I could not be happier with the morning, a wonderful confidence-builder in the series of workshops and group activities of our ever-popular Wellness program.

FYI, Terry runs the Wellness program in collaboration with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, with assistance from Local Motion, Skirack, Old Spokes Home and From Within Coaching. We’re expanding the program into other areas and offering more frequent groups. Watch this space!

Our group began riding on the bike path, and two chain drops later we assembled at Leddy Park, where the participants were given 3 options for ride length.

Option one was to continue to the Causeway for more mileage (led by Jeannette and Serena). Option 2 was a North Ave option to practice road riding (led by Karyn and Dave) and option 3 was to return on the bike path (led by Lisa and Megan). All the while Colin kept track of us from his truck…not an easy task.

All three groups prevailed and a truly good time was had by all! Some of us have “barely been on a bike in decades,” others just needed a brush up on their urban cycling skills. It’s wonderful to see the groups come together, women young and young-at-heart gain confidence in their skills, and everyone enjoying cycling more as part of a healthy lifestyle.

  • DISCOVERING PEDAL POWER.

Terry Bicycles Wellness Revolution group ride on bike path

Another great night of the Wellness Revolution with Terry Bikes.

    Contributed by Pat Jackson

It ain’t just about the bling.

These are people who really want women to get out on their bikes, feel comfortable, feel confident, and make this a part of their everyday lives. Women who haven’t biked in ten years; women whose bikes have been sitting in a storage shed; women who don’t even own a bike helmet; women who couldn’t even imagine biking in the city.

So we started out with a welcome by Liz Robert from Terry Bikes, giving us the overall picture. In the crowd, big smiles, some nervous laughter, but deep down inside I’m sure each woman there nurtured a desire to break out, to get out on that bike. Even if it has been 10 years.

We were each fitted with a helmet, so no excuse for not feeling ready to go out and conquer. Especially because it was fluorescent yellow and we could be seen for miles. Kind of fun biking in this group of 30-some women and feeling like I belong to some cult because of these fluorescent yellow helmets. Believe me, cars take a wide berth. That’s a good thing.

Terry Bikes Wellness Revolution group bike maintenance class
The following week, we had a Maintenance Workshop at Skirack. Again some nervous laughter, but then a more focused attention on our two instructors who took us through some of the nitty-gritty of popping a chain back on after it came off the sprocket, that dastardly event of changing a flat, educating us about what we should have in our little pack that rides on our bike: a patch kit, an extra tube, ID, some cash, even a glove to keep yourself from getting greased up if you’re doing some repair work. All of these recommendations, along with a compact pump to ride along on your bike can give you the confidence you need to feel like you can venture farther from home.

    The confidence continues to smolder.

Then Saturday rolled around and our first group ride, and what a group! This included the Tuesday and Thursday night groups so we had about 60 women with our famous fluorescent yellow helmets. We actually started the day by going through some yoga stretching and some dancing out on the lawn in front of the Terry Warehouse. Stretches, warming up, that got us ready to leap on our bikes and head out on the bike path. As I rode along in this sinuous stream of women out on an early, somewhat raw Saturday morning, the sky threatening rain, it was uplifting to look ahead and see this long strand of wild women, all out to conquer a fear, a doubt they may have had, but were now working at putting behind them, surrounded by like-minded individuals, all doing the same. Bravo!

Terry Bikes Wellness Revolution group urban cycling workshop
The next Tuesday evening we met at the Terry Office again for an Urban Cycling workshop. Jason, from LocalMotion listened to our fears, our concerns — and there were many — and gently but fervently explained how to handle each one. He had been doing this for years and was ready to show us how we could break through this barrier also. So off we went, wending our way through Burlington’s streets, slick with rain, but each of us heeding his lessons, implementing them, stopping to regroup, discuss, and then go out for more. We climbed hills, then turned around and headed back down, practicing our braking in such a way to afford much more stability, more confidence. Some who were so fearful before leaving the confines of the office were now sailing down a steep hill, positioning themselves farther back in the saddle, as he had explained, to maintain more control. Even smiling while doing it! Just beautiful!

I’m thrilled to be able to be a part of this group. I felt like I came upon this by chance, and I’m just gushing about each event that we have together. Well I may have been biking for years, in lots of different settings, but I’m still learning lots from each of these gatherings. I’m learning from the teachers, the mechanics, the bike advocates who are out there making life better for us.

But also, I’m learning from the women. Hearing folks murmur with a nervousness that is now subsiding. They’re asking the questions, they’re facing their fears. They’re doing it!

Thank you Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, and thank you Terry Bikes, and to all the local bike shops, enthusiasts, educators, fanatics — and that’s a good thing! — who are partnering with them to get lots of wild women out on their bikes.

Watch out for those fluorescent yellow helmets. There’s no holding us back now.
